Run your pump 8–10 hours a day in summer

In Vegas summers, your pool needs at least one full turnover per day. Cut runtime in winter to save energy.

The one-turnover rule

Your pool pump should circulate the entire volume of your pool through the filter at least once per day. In Las Vegas summers, where heat and sunlight create perfect algae conditions, we recommend a full turnover plus a buffer — usually 8 to 10 hours.

A 15,000 gallon pool with a typical 50 GPM pump needs about 5 hours just for one turnover. Add safety margin for skimming, heat, and bather load and you land at 8–10 hours.

Run during the right hours

Run mostly during daylight. Sunlight is when chlorine gets destroyed and when algae has the best chance to grow — circulating water during peak sun keeps sanitizer in motion and skimmers actually doing their job.

If you have time-of-use electric rates with NV Energy, split the schedule: a few hours mid-morning and a few hours late evening. Avoid the 2pm–7pm peak rate window when possible.

Variable speed pumps pay for themselves

If you're still running a single-speed pump, you're burning money. Variable speed pumps run quietly at low RPM for most of the day and use 70–80% less electricity. Most Vegas homeowners see payback within 18–24 months.
