What monsoon dust does to a pool
Vegas monsoon season (July–September) brings haboobs that can drop a visible layer of fine silt across your entire pool surface in minutes. That dust mixes with sunscreen, oils, and pollen, then settles on the floor and clogs your filter media.
If you ignore it, three things happen fast: filter pressure climbs, flow drops, and chlorine demand spikes because all that organic matter is eating sanitizer.
The 10-minute post-storm routine
Within 24 hours of a storm hitting your pool:
- Skim the surface thoroughly — get the floating dust before it sinks
- Empty skimmer baskets and the pump basket
- Brush the walls and floor toward the main drain
- Run the pump an extra 4–6 hours that day
- Check filter pressure — if it's 8+ psi above clean baseline, backwash or clean cartridges
