How much water you're really losing
A typical Las Vegas pool loses 1/4 inch of water per day in summer — sometimes more during stretches of 110°F+ days with low humidity. Across a month that's 2–3 inches, or roughly 1,000+ gallons for an average backyard pool.
Most of that is evaporation, not a leak. But if you're losing more than 1/2 inch per day with no cover and no recent backwash, get it checked.
Why low water wrecks circulation
When water drops below the bottom of the skimmer mouth, your skimmer starts sucking air. That kills suction, lets debris float and rot, and can damage the pump if it runs dry.
Top off weekly to keep water at mid-skimmer or higher. A simple float valve on a hose bib makes this automatic.
Cut evaporation 30–50%
If you're heating your pool or watching your water bill climb, a liquid solar blanket or a real cover can cut evaporation dramatically. Even running the pump only when needed (instead of 24/7) reduces splash and surface agitation.
